VOC Launches Blanket Drive to Bring Warmth and Dignity to Struggling Communities

As winter’s chill lingers in Cape Town, the Voice of the Cape (VOC) is stepping up efforts to help families in need with its annual VOC Blanket Drive, part of the station’s August Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative.

This year, VOC has partnered with Ahlesa Blankets with the goal of raising funds to purchase 500 high-quality, fire-resistant blankets for distribution to vulnerable communities.

Station Manager Goolam Fakier urged listeners to get involved, noting that a single blanket costs R145.

“The VOC Blanket Drive, this time in partnership with Ahlesa Blankets, is calling each and every one of our loyal listeners to help us wrap up our communities in warmth this winter,” Fakier said.

“Purchase one, two, three — as many blankets as you wish. There’s going to be a deserving community that will benefit from this noble project.”

VOC General Manager Abdul Aleem Gamza highlighted the importance of the initiative, even as winter draws to a close.

“Blankets are a necessity. They help in so many ways. These blankets are fireproof and made to last. For us to partner with Ahlesa to provide them to the destitute and those in need is a blessing, and it’s another opportunity for the Voice of the Cape listener to show their support,” Gamza said.

The drive is not just about physical warmth, but also about restoring dignity and providing comfort to those facing harsh conditions.

“While we tuck ourselves into warm beds at night, there are children, mothers, and elders in our own communities shivering in the dark,” said VOC CSR representative Loushe Jordaan Gilbert.

“The VOC Blanket Drive is not just about blankets, it’s about dignity, comfort, and hope. This winter don’t let someone suffer in silence. Be the reason they feel cared for.”
