Several legacy foundations, including the Desmond Tutu and Leah Foundations and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation, have withdrawn from the Preparatory Task Team and the upcoming First National Convention of the National Dialogue, scheduled to take place this week on 15 and 16 August.
Speaking to VOC News, Janet Jobson, CEO of the Desmond Tutu and Leah Foundation, clarified that the foundation is not withdrawing from the entire dialogue but only from the upcoming convention.
“We believe that the National Dialogue project represents a generational opportunity for all South Africans to come together and collectively chart a way forward for our country, and that is something we truly support.
“We embarked on this journey with a set of principles that we now feel have been undermined. These principles include the necessity for the process to be citizen-led and involve deeply meaningful engagement. It must be inclusive of all South Africans, and there must be absolute transparency and accountability regarding funding and procurement.
“We sensed that, as we approached the National Convention, we were not in a position to deliver a meaningful outcome that the citizens of South Africa deserve.”
