Early reports indicate that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will need to allocate over R1 million due to a series of burglaries and incidents of vandalism at schools during the June/July holiday.
Bronagh Hammond from the WCED informed VOC News that despite security measures being implemented at 424 schools, the province experienced 57 incidents of burglary and vandalism affecting 46 schools during the winter break.
Meanwhile, education activist Vanessa Le Roux spoke to VOC News, stating that the WCED has not effectively implemented strategies to address the ongoing issues of vandalism. She also commented on the high-risk areas in the Cape Flats, asserting that Education MEC David Maynier is out of touch with the realities on the ground.
