To restore vital infrastructure, the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has launched more than ten construction projects as part of a comprehensive flood damage repair strategy being implemented across multiple district municipalities.
Among the key projects is the rehabilitation of the Seven Passes Road in the Garden Route District Municipality. Portions of the road were severely damaged during major storm events and flooding in November 2021, rendering it unsafe and disrupting transport routes in the area.
According to the department, the overall cost of flood damage repair work across the province is currently estimated at R53.4 million. The construction period for the projects is expected to span approximately 18 months.
The strategy forms part of a broader effort to enhance infrastructure resilience and ensure safer, more accessible roads in flood-prone areas. The department says the initiative underscores its commitment to repairing and maintaining essential infrastructure while supporting economic recovery in affected communities.
