The multinational oil company Shell has received approval for its proposed Northern Cape Ultra Deep Oil and Gas exploration project from an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). This decision has faced criticism from environmental activists, who argue that the project would negatively affect local fishing communities that rely on the environment for their livelihoods and sustenance.
In an interview with VOC News, Liz McDaid, Strategic Lead at the Green Connection, expressed her frustration. She stated that it is astonishing that the oil company received approval, especially considering the realities of climate change. Reports indicate that we are experiencing floods, and thousands of families depend on the ocean for food. McDaid expressed that the approval feels like a betrayal of those impacted by the decision. While the rationale provided is that the project will have a significant impact, the likelihood of that is questionable.
“We are quite annoyed by this decision and still have time to appeal. We urge everyone to voice their concerns now. Oil and gas are not the future, and in South Africa, we must move away from these industries and halt such explorations.”
“The stress and trauma caused to local communities whenever a new project is approved is unjustifiable, especially considering that we are already in court regarding two other proposals that advanced despite environmental concerns. It appears that the Environmental Affairs minister, who is supposed to protect our constitutional right to a healthy environment, is not fulfilling their responsibilities,” said McDaid.
“Why is the government investing in these types of projects instead of reallocating funds to support the people?”
