The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning ahead of a cold front expected to sweep across several parts of the country later this week. The Western Cape is expected to bear the brunt of the system, with rain and thundershowers forecast from Thursday.
In recent weeks, Cape Town has been hit by multiple cold fronts that brought heavy downpours, damaging hundreds of informal dwellings and displacing thousands of residents. Humanitarian organisations and disaster management teams have been working tirelessly to assist those affected.
SAWS senior forecaster Tokelo Chiloane says the cold and wet conditions will extend into the eastern parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and Gauteng by Friday.
“Most provinces will experience a drop in temperatures, accompanied by rainfall and storm activity,” Chiloane explained. “Only the northern parts of the country, such as Musina and Upington, will experience relatively milder conditions.”
Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Motorists are advised to drive with caution due to potentially slippery roads and reduced visibility.
