6 injured in explosion in Vanguard Est

Police are investigating the circumstances around an explosion at a house in Vanguard estate in Athlone on Monday night, in which six teenagers were seriously injured. Paramedics responded to reports of a hand grenade explosion at a house in Goud Street in Vanguard Estate. On arrival, paramedics found that six people were injured. Injuries varied from moderate to serious injuries. Patients were treated and transported to hospital.

Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk said details of the explosion is being investigated. It is believed that the device that detonated was a hand grenade. The teenagers aged between 15 and 20, are receiving treatment in hospital.

“Circumstances surrounding an explosion yesterday at about 18:30pm Vanguard Estate, whereby six young males aged between 15 and 20 years old was seriously injured are under investigation. The six young males were rushed to various hospitals in serious conditions for emergency medical treatment,” said van Wyk.

“It is unknown what type of device exploded and where they got the device from. A, unlawful possession of explosive to cause injury to persons or damage to property case was opened for investigation.”
