The Western Cape Education Department has announced that the on-time admissions window for Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 8 for the 2027 school year opens tomorrow and will close on 14 April 2026. Parents and guardians are being urged to apply early to ensure their children are included in the first round of placements.
Education officials say submitting applications within the official timeframe is essential for proper planning and the placement of learners across schools in the province.
Director of Communications for the department, Bronagh Hammond, says the most important step for parents is preparing all the required documentation ahead of time.
“I can’t believe we’re already thinking about 2027,” Hammond said. “But it’s important that parents applying for Grade R, 1 and 8 start by getting their documents ready. That’s usually the most painful part of the process because, like many people, we all dislike admin.”
Hammond explained that parents should gather the learner’s most recent school report, particularly for Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications, as well as immunisation records.
“That includes the Road to Health booklet for primary school applications,” she said. “Parents will also need proof of address, such as a municipal bill, and identity documents for both the learner and the parent or guardian.”
She added that these documents should ideally be certified at a police station before submitting the application to avoid delays during the process.
The department has encouraged parents not to wait until the last minute, warning that late applications could reduce the chances of securing placement at their preferred schools.
