Fire crews in the Cape Winelands continue battling the Wemmershoek wildfire near Franschhoek, which originated in the Langrug area. Overnight flare-ups raised concerns, but rapid response by ground teams and aerial support helped contain them.
Cape Winelands District Municipality spokesperson Anesca Roodt provided an update on the ongoing operations. “We can report that we’ve made good progress throughout yesterday and last night, and there were some concerning flare-ups, but through quick action with ground teams and aerial resources, those flare-ups were contained,” she said.
Roodt explained the challenges firefighters face: “Well, because at the moment the fire line is over 50 kilometers perimeter, and that creates a mix of fuel load. So, we have some alien vegetation, we have some fynbos, because it’s such a large area that is currently burning.”
She added that the cause of the fire is not yet known. “It will only be fully investigated once the fires have been contained,” Roodt said.
