Quality assurance body Umalusi has confirmed that the staggered marking of the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, which began on 18 November, is on track to conclude on 18 December. According to Umalusi CEO Dr Mafu Rakometsi, the process will move into the next phase immediately afterward, with the capturing of marks continuing until 5 January. The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations will then conduct a full review of examination management.
Rakometsi emphasised that the extensive oversight is designed to safeguard the integrity of the country’s most critical school-leaving assessment.
“The goal of the above quality assurance processes is to ensure that the examinations are conducted and managed in accordance with the prescripts of the regulations that govern the national assessments, ensuring the highest credibility and integrity of the Umalusi certificates,” he said.
Following the evaluation process, Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube is expected to announce the final NSC results on 12 January.
This year, close to 900,000 full-time and part-time candidates sat for the NSC exams, an increase reflecting both population growth and improved school retention.
Umalusi said the scale of the examination makes rigorous quality checks essential, with markers, moderators, and verification teams deployed across the country.
Despite the size of the cohort and the staggered marking approach, all procedures remain fully compliant with national regulations.
The 2025 results announcement will mark the culmination of a tightly monitored process aimed at ensuring fairness, reliability, and public confidence in the NSC qualification.
