Truecaller provides tips and advice on how to detect scams

South Africa is approaching its peak scam-risk season in five years, experiencing a significant increase in fraudulent calls, SMS scams, and impersonation efforts from November to January.

As millions grab bonuses, shop online, and arrange year-end trips, scammers are taking advantage of the urgency and chaos to prey on individuals.

Speaking to VOC News, Mmathebe Zvobwo, from Truecaller, rolls out a nationwide festive season safety campaign. She provided tips and advice on how to detect scammers.

“You have to be vigilant and pay attention to the language that is being used over the call or SMS, which will essentially create pressure to act now, and that this is the only time you can act,” explained Zvobwo.

“This move is a red flag because it is simply pressuring you to take action without thinking or verifying,” she added.
