The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) says more than 3.3 million voters are registered in the Western Cape and is encouraging eligible citizens who have not yet registered, as well as voters who have recently moved, to update their details during the voter registration drive.
IEC Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse said the vast majority of voter registration stations across the province opened successfully on the first day of the registration weekend.
Speaking to the media outside Noluthando School for the Deaf in Site B, Khayelitsha, on Saturday, Hendrickse said 1,618 of the Western Cape’s 1,623 registration stations were operational. Only five stations, located in remote areas of Beaufort West, Kannaland and the West Coast, were unable to open due to inaccessible roads.
Hendrickse said the affected communities are small settlements where many residents are already registered. He assured voters that the IEC would conduct targeted outreach to ensure those communities are not disadvantaged.
“We will engage with these communities in advance as part of a targeted communication campaign and inform them when we will be visiting. We remain committed to ensuring that all eligible voters have an opportunity to register,” he said.
