A bail hearing set to take place in the mining town of Swartruggens in North West is drawing national attention, as five Mexican nationals accused of operating a massive methamphetamine laboratory await a court decision on whether they will be released or remain behind bars.
The suspects were arrested following a police raid on a remote farm in the province, where authorities say they uncovered a clandestine drug manufacturing operation with an estimated street value of R1 billion.
The discovery has been described as one of the largest methamphetamine busts in South African history and has raised concerns about the growing reach of transnational organised crime networks in the country.
