Simon’s Town Mosque, Residents Raise Concerns Over Boutique Development

A Simon’s Town mosque, Noorul Islam Mosque, and nearby residents are voicing opposition to a planned boutique development, saying it could make access to the historic place of worship more difficult.

The project is being led by Tintswalo, a company known for luxury hotels and resorts. While the community initially welcomed the development, concerns have grown over how it will affect access to the mosque.

Abdussalaam Cader, custodian of the masjid and a local resident, told VOC News that the mosque is already accessible only via a very limited route.

“The access to the mosque is via a very narrow lane, Bikum Lane. It used to be a pedestrian lane, and now it is the only way in and out,” said Cader.

He warned that many elderly worshippers depend on vehicles to attend prayers.

“We have elders in their 90s who can only come to the mosque by car. If this access is blocked or restricted, they simply won’t be able to attend,” he said.

The mosque also faces space constraints during Friday prayers, with parking already stretched.

Cader highlighted alternative access routes that he says the developer and the City have not considered.

“All we are asking is that they look at those alternatives before deciding on this one route that will affect the mosque,” he said.
