Severe Weather Warning as Flooding Claims Lives Across South Africa

The South African Weather Service says it is closely monitoring an intense cut-off low-pressure system currently affecting large parts of the country, bringing widespread rain and dangerous conditions.

Weather forecaster Tokelo Chiloane confirmed that an orange level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall has been issued for the Koukamma Local Municipality and Kouga Local Municipality, as well as the Garden Route from Wednesday into Thursday.

“You also have an orange level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, particularly over KwaZulu-Natal. Strong winds, rough seas, and even snowfall over high-lying areas are expected, along with a significant drop in temperatures across most parts of the country,” Chiloane said.

He added that conditions are expected to start improving from Thursday, although cold weather will persist.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Centre has confirmed that flooding linked to the heavy rains has claimed at least three lives.

Two bodies were recovered in the Northern Cape, while a 12-year-old child died in Taung.

Authorities have warned that the severe weather conditions are expected to continue until Thursday, urging residents in affected areas to remain cautious and heed official warnings.
