SANTACO Launches Festive Road Safety Drive in Khayelitsha

SANTACO Western Cape has launched a Festive Road Safety Activation at the Site-C Long Distance Taxi Rank in Khayelitsha as families across the country prepare to travel for the holidays. The initiative began on Thursday, under the theme Putting driver wellness first.

The campaign focuses on ensuring that long-distance taxi drivers and their vehicles are prepared for the busy festive season. Drivers are being encouraged to prioritise rest, take regular breaks, and avoid immediately returning after long trips to reduce fatigue-related risks.

Operators are also being advised to check vehicle essentials such as tyres, brakes, lights, and seatbelts before departure. Passengers will receive guidance on seatbelt use, safe loading, and reporting unsafe behaviour.

“Every festive season, thousands of passengers rely on taxis to reach their destinations. This activation highlights the importance of driver wellness and road safety during a period of high demand,” said the General Secretary of SANTACO Western Cape.

The initiative involves collaboration with law enforcement and the Western Cape Department of Mobility to promote safer travel over the holiday period. Officials say well-rested drivers and roadworthy vehicles are key to preventing accidents and ensuring safer journeys for passengers.
