SAFCEI calls out gov over pursuit of nuclear energy

Tomorrow will be four years since the Western Cape High Court found the government’s one-trillion rand nuclear deal and associated energy procurement processes to be “illegal and unconstitutional”.

The Southern African Faith Communities’ Environment Institute says the deal would have bankrupted the country. Safcei’s Executive Director, Francesca de Gasparis, says it is however concerning that on the fourth anniversary of the ruling against the corrupt nuclear deal, the SA government has begun to again pursue nuclear energy ambitions.

She says if government is serious about President Ramaphosa’s statement last Thursday at the climate summit, then as much as possible of their energy planning and resourcing need to go into renewable energy sources.
