The impeachment committee established to consider the case involving President Cyril Ramaphosa is facing renewed attention following recent legal developments in the Phala Phala matter. Ramaphosa’s legal team has filed papers in the Western Cape High Court seeking a review of the Section 89 Independent Panel Report.
Public governance researcher Hlumelo Xaba said the panel’s findings were based on alleged constitutional violations linked to the president’s conduct.
“I am actually going to start off by saying that according to the panel’s report, Section 89 independent panel report, it was stipulated that the president was in contravention of Section 96 of the Constitution,” said Xaba.
He explained that Section 96 prohibits members of the executive from undertaking other paid work outside of their official duties.
“So it is upon those grounds that the president was actually found to have contravened that particular statute,” he added.
The matter continues to draw political and legal scrutiny as Parliament’s impeachment committee process unfolds.
