The Border Management Authority (BMA) apprehended nine Bangladeshi nationals who attempted to enter South Africa using fraudulent travel documents and counterfeit visas at OR Tambo International Airport on Thursday.
According to the BMA, officials detected irregularities in the travellers’ documentation during routine immigration checks, prompting further investigation. The nine individuals were subsequently denied entry into the country.
Authorities revealed that all nine travellers were in possession of fraudulent South African visas allegedly issued by the South African High Commission in New Delhi, India. The discovery has raised concerns about the increasing sophistication of document fraud and the potential exploitation of official diplomatic channels.
Speaking to VOC News, BMA spokesperson Mmemme Mogotsi outlined the sequence of events at the airport. She explained that immigration officials identified discrepancies in the visas during the verification process, leading to the immediate detention of the travellers.
