Rashaad Daniels, who is accused of murdering 31-year-old Suraan Windvogel, whose body was allegedly found inside a black refuse bag at a property in Kewtown, Athlone, has been remanded in custody following his second appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
The proceedings drew a large turnout from members of the Athlone community, who packed the public gallery in support of Windvogel’s family and to follow the case.
The matter was postponed to 10 September for further investigation. The State opposed bail, citing Daniels’ previous convictions dating back to the 1990s, as well as the revocation of his parole. Daniels is currently serving a sentence after his parole was revoked and is expected to appear virtually in relation to that matter.
The magistrate also granted the media permission to broadcast the proceedings despite objections from the defence.
According to the Cape Argus, the State previously alleged that witnesses heard the sound of plastic and adhesive tape coming from the room where Windvogel was last seen with Daniels. Prosecutors also claimed a foul smell later came from the room and that Daniels allegedly sought assistance to dispose of the body after Windvogel’s death.
Outside court, community activist Dinielle Smith Dirks thanked residents for showing solidarity with the victim’s family and welcomed the court’s decision to postpone the matter.
“We are grateful that the justice system has actually done their job. We are glad that it’s been extended to the 10th of September because it gives us time to mourn and go through the grieving process. We’d also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who came out in their numbers. We really appreciate this community of Athlone,” Dirks said.
VOC News attempted to speak to Windvogel’s family following the court proceedings, but they declined to comment.
