Communications and Digital Technologies Minister, Solly Malatsi, has appointed an independent panel to review South Africa’s draft artificial intelligence policy after it was withdrawn over fictitious and possibly AI-generated references.
Addressing Parliament, Malatsi said the seven-member panel will correct flawed citations and recommend amendments before the policy is submitted to Cabinet for approval.
Malatsi confirmed that the revised policy is expected to be published for public comment by January 2027.
“There would be an internal team that assists with the drafting and also provides support for the advisory panel. We have finalised the terms of reference for the work that the advisory panel will be doing. The panel will be able to engage with the terms of reference, finalise them, and roll out the project outline,” he said.
