The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has accepted a medical affidavit from Medicare24 CEO Mike van Wyk, leading to the postponement of his scheduled testimony. Van Wyk is accused of improper involvement in law enforcement-related matters and alleged tender irregularities involving businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi.
His legal representative, Sandy Du Plessis, told the commission that Van Wyk is suffering from severe panic attacks and requires urgent medical care.
“Yesterday, Mr. van Wyk suffered from severe panic attacks. He saw a psychiatrist, Dr. Arnold Lawrence,” Du Plessis said. “When I spoke to the psychiatrist, he said a patient needs to be admitted to the psychiatric unit at Jacaranda Hospital.”
Du Plessis added that medical advice recommended hospitalisation, prompting the commission to postpone proceedings until Van Wyk is fit to continue his testimony. The inquiry is expected to announce new dates for his appearance.
