G20 Leaders will meet in Johannesburg to discuss the agenda – global equality, solidarity, and sustainability

This weekend, G20 leaders will meet in Johannesburg to discuss a threefold agenda of global equality, solidarity, and sustainability issues crucial for the global South.

Speaking to VOC News, development economist and political commentator Dr. Jason Motsyoka said diversity is no longer solely within U.S. jurisdiction.

“South Africa has moved forward with the global South to advocate for equality. These are the same issues—such as unemployment and inequality—that South Africa has raised on the global stage. While these challenges are domestic, they can also be addressed through international platforms like the United Nations,” he explained.

Dr. Motsyoka added that while the agenda is well-structured, South Africa faces pressure to ensure it reflects the discussions taking place.

“The absence of the U.S. may suggest less opposition in the conversation. However, certain decisions require a number of votes to move forward. South Africa has mitigated this by inviting approximately 15 countries expected to support the discussion,” he said.
