South Africa’s inflation rate has edged higher, with new data showing an increase in consumer prices driven largely by rising fuel costs. According to Statistics South Africa, annual inflation rose to 4.5% in May 2026, up from 4.0% in April. This marks the highest recorded level since mid-2024. Fuel prices were the main contributor to the uptick, recording sharp monthly and annual increases. Despite this, food inflation continued to ease, with several key categories showing slower price growth or outright declines.
Commenting on the statement by Stats SA, Dr Dick Forslund. Senior economist at Alternative Information and Development Centre said this is a very fragile situation of high prices of diesel and petrol, and the situation will subside after two months.
