Final Eight Battle for World Cup Glory

Only eight teams remain in the race to lift the FIFA World Cup trophy as the quarterfinals get underway tomorrow following a dramatic round of 16.

France will continue their bid to become only the second European nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals when they take on Morocco in Boston. Spain, champions in 2010, will face Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday, while England meet surprise package Norway in Miami on Saturday after the Norwegians reached the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. Defending champions Argentina will conclude the quarterfinal lineup against Switzerland in Kansas on Sunday.

Argentina booked their place after producing one of the tournament’s most memorable comebacks. Trailing Egypt 2-0 for more than an hour following goals from Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Ziko, the holders fought back through Cristian Romero before captain Lionel Messi levelled the scores. Enzo Fernández completed the remarkable turnaround with a stoppage-time winner to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Switzerland secured the final quarterfinal berth after edging Colombia 4-3 in a penalty shootout in Vancouver, setting up a highly anticipated clash with Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina.
