The alleged killer of 14-year-old Alnika Mitchell has had his court matter postponed to next Thursday.
The 35-year-old, Milosh Basson, made a brief appearance at the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday. He faces six charges, including the murder of Alnika, who was shot in the yard of her Kensington home on Sunday while watching matric celebrations.
Basson also faces charges dating back to 2023, including four counts of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of drugs. During his appearance, he told the court he does not wish to be represented by Legal Aid. The case has been postponed to allow him to apply for legal representation.
Alnika’s family described the heartbreak of losing her.
“She was just watching the matric balls, like any other child would do. She was joking with my sister and saying, ‘Ma, look at the matric balls.’ But we didn’t know at that time we were going to lose her. For that perpetrator, no bail. I’m broken because I don’t know what to tell my niece and my sister—they are heartbroken too,” said Jodiane De Wet.
The family will hold a memorial service at her home on Thursday to honour her life. A planned picket outside the magistrate’s court to oppose bail has been moved to Sunday afternoon in Factreton, as part of a broader campaign against gangsterism in the area.
“She was a very sweet, innocent child. This time is supposed to be for festivities, family, and celebrations. Now, we must prepare a funeral. It’s heartbreaking to see a report that says your child has progressed to grade 10, but you’re preparing for a funeral instead,” De Wet added.
