The City’s Fire and Rescue Services remained on the scene of the Gordan’s Bay fire throughout the night, but have managed to contain the blaze. Yesterday five residential properties were destroyed by the blaze, which spread in the direction of Rooi Els. City Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne says that more 400 fires fighters worked to contain the blaze near the Steenbras River mouth. He says no further damage had been reported.

A second fire started at Red Hill in Simon’s Town at about 22h30 last night. Layne says 12 fire engines and four water tankers remain on the scene. He says the South African Navy had sustained some property damage, which fire fighters dealt with and were assisted by Navy personnel.
“The fire has spread up until the Plato Road area in Scarborough. No damage to any residential property occurred during the night at the informal settlement, although, that was under threat late last night.”
The cause of both fires is still under investigation.
