Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old, grade 11 learner from Strand Secondary School who died during school hours on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg says a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

“Strand police registered an inquest for investigation following the death of a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday,18 August 2026, at about 12:08, at a secondary school in Onverwacht Road, Strand. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” said Twigg.

Western Cape Education Department spokesperson Bronagh Hammond has confirmed the death of a grade 11 learner who passed away on Tuesday during school hours in one of the classrooms.

“Now, the reasons for his passing cannot be confirmed by the WCED, but health authorities our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the learner’s family, friends and the school community during this very difficult time. The school was granted permission to close early on that day to allow the school community to time to process the tragic event. Teaching and learning has continued since, but counselling and psychosocial support has been made available to both learners and staff to assist them during this period of grief,” said Hammond.
