The Electoral Commission (IEC) says South Africans responded positively to the final voter registration weekend ahead of the Local Government Elections in November.
According to a preliminary report, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of voter registration transactions during the weekend, followed by the Eastern Cape and Gauteng.
The final registration drive follows the first voter registration weekend, held on 20 and 21 June, during which more than three million registration transactions were recorded nationwide.
Speaking to the media, IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo said attention now turns to the formal proclamation of the election date by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa.
“The proclamation sets in motion a number of important processes. Firstly, the commission will have to publicise an election timetable for the performance of certain electoral functions, such as the publication of lists of voting stations, the inspection of the voters’ roll, and the cut-off date for candidate nominations,” Mamabolo said.
The IEC says it expects further details on the election timetable to be announced once the election date has been officially proclaimed.
