South Africans will pay significantly less for fuel from Wednesday after the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources announced sizeable cuts to the prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin.
The price of 93 unleaded petrol will decrease by R2.01 per litre, while 95 unleaded petrol will fall by R1.96 per litre. Diesel will decrease by between R3.14 and R3.59 per litre, depending on the grade, while illuminating paraffin will be reduced by R5.23 per litre.
Department spokesperson Lerato Ntsoko said the latest adjustments follow the monthly fuel price review and will take effect on Wednesday.
The South African Petroleum Retailers Association (SAPRA) has welcomed the reductions, saying they are expected to lower transport and operating costs for both motorists and businesses.
“These fuel price reductions will bring welcome relief to motorists and businesses alike,” said SAPRA spokesperson Vishal Premlall.
However, Premlall cautioned that lower fuel prices alone will not reverse the financial pressures facing many South Africans.
“Consumer confidence remains weak amid rising living costs and ongoing economic uncertainty,” he said.
The latest adjustment marks one of the largest fuel price decreases in recent months and is expected to provide some respite for households and businesses that have been affected by persistently high transport and fuel costs.
