The chairperson of the Select Committee on Security and Justice, Jane Mananiso, has stated that R1.6 billion has been allocated towards tackling gender-related crimes.
Speaking in Parliament under the theme of “Deepening the values of peace, justice, safety, and security”, the chairperson of the Select Committee reported that support would be provided for initiatives aimed at addressing gender-related crimes and supporting victims.
“On the matter of the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Units (FSC), I think one would want to take you up on the rest, as one of the emphases by SAPS is the fact that previously this issue of rape kits and investigations was done not uniformly and professionally, but now there’s a targeted approach on how they’re going to be dealing with it based on case by case. And we had an indication that the allocation towards GBVF intervention is 1.6 billion allocated to family violence, child protection and sexual offences,” stated the Chairperson of the Select Committee.
However, Mananiso noted that future engagements with SAPS or Joint Committee Meetings would not discuss the matter, as money has now been allocated.
“Because the NCOP has adopted a community-centric, responsive intervention and the work of doing things as legislature. So we would be continuously doing that work, noting that as well. The GBVF has been declared a national disaster. So there’s nothing that we’ll be doing as the select committee when we meet with SAPS or we have joint committee meetings. We won’t be touching on these particular issues because stakes are very high and rocketing,” Mananiso said.
