IEC Gears Up for June Voter Registration Weekend Ahead of 2026 Local Elections

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) of South Africa says preparations for the voter registration weekend on 20 and 21 June are well underway as the country gears up for the 2026 Local Government Elections on 4 November.

The registration drive will give eligible South Africans an opportunity to register to vote, update their details and confirm their voting station information ahead of the polls.

Speaking to VOC News, IEC Western Cape Provincial Electoral Officer Michael Hendrickse said the commission has made significant progress in preparing for the registration weekend.

“We started the recruitment process in January for our registration officials. Those are the people who could be working at our voting stations, and we’re close to about 95% in terms of the recruitment of our staff,” Hendrickse said.

He added that the IEC is also finalising agreements for voting stations across the province.

“We’re also busy contracting our voting stations because we need to have formal agreements in place. In the metro alone, we have more than 800 voting stations,” he said.

Hendrickse encouraged voters to use the registration weekend to ensure their information is correct and up to date.

“Voters can go to their voting station and either register for the first time or update their registration details. They can check their information to ensure that our records are accurate and up to date,” he added.

VOC became the first Muslim radio station in South Africa when a special events license was granted to the station in Ramadan/January 1995. Subsequent temporary broadcast licenses were granted, permitting the station to broadcast for 24 hours.
