For many learners at Spine Road High in Mitchells Plain, this year’s matric results reflect far more than exam marks; they represent perseverance in the face of daily social and economic challenges.
The school achieved a 98% pass rate in the 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations, with 228 of its 232 candidates passing. Even more encouraging was a record 94% bachelor’s pass rate, opening the door for many learners to access university.
Principal Mark Fairbairn acknowledged that the school narrowly missed last year’s perfect pass rate but emphasised the strength of this year’s academic performance.
“We always aim for 100% across all grades, and we target more than 80% bachelor passes. This year, we raised the bar because the class performed so well, and we are proud to see them achieve a 94% bachelor’s pass rate,” he said.
He added that learners in Mitchells Plain should never feel limited by their circumstances.
“Our learners can compete with the best. The social challenges around them should never hold them back,” he said.
Among those celebrating this week is matriculant Fhoebe Williams, who described the year as both emotionally and academically demanding.
“Physics was really difficult for me, but I passed it nonetheless, and I’m very proud of myself,” she said.
Her mother shared her pride in both Fhoebe and her close friend, Jaden Abrams, praising their consistency and focus throughout the year.
“They exceeded our expectations. They’ve always stayed motivated and never lost focus,” she said.
Jaden, who plans to study mechanical engineering at the University of Cape Town, said he approached results day with calm and confidence.
“The work you put in determines the results you get, and now I’m ready for the next chapter,” he said.
