Concerns Raised Over Journalists’ Undisclosed SAJBD-Sponsored Trip to Israel

VOC News has been alerted to reports that journalists from The Citizen, Sunday Times, and BizNews were sent to Israel as alleged “propagandists for Israel,” failing to disclose that the trip was sponsored by the South African Jewish Board of Deputies (SAJBD).

This has raised concerns about a possible violation of the Press Council’s Code of Ethics and Conduct for South African Print and Online Media.

BizNews, however, confirmed to VOC News that it had communicated publicly that the trip was sponsored by the SAJBD. This information was independently verified by VOC News.

The complaint to the Press Council was lodged by writer, activist, and commentator Hassen Lorgat, who has been reporting on the latest developments regarding this issue.

*VOC News contacted the outlets mentioned. The Sunday Times has not responded to queries, while The Citizen stated that they were unable to conduct an interview. BizNews, however, confirmed that it disclosed the sponsorship to the public.

VOC became the first Muslim radio station in South Africa when a special events license was granted to the station in Ramadan/January 1995. Subsequent temporary broadcast licenses were granted, permitting the station to broadcast for 24 hours.
