The Women on Farms Project (WFP) has strongly condemned the recent surge in xenophobic violence, warning that intimidation and force are not solutions to the country’s deep-rooted social, political, and economic challenges.
The organisation says that blaming and targeting vulnerable migrants from other African countries diverts attention from the underlying drivers of the crisis, including slow economic growth, high unemployment, and entrenched inequality.
A WFP representative, Kara Grace, unpacked the situation from a farm worker’s perspective and reflected on how these tensions are being experienced in rural and agricultural communities.
