Teddy Bear Foundation Takes Government to Court Over Child Protection Register

By Rachel Mohamed

SECTION27, representing the Teddy Bear Foundation, has approached the Gauteng High Court to compel government departments to maintain and implement the National Child Protection Register (NCPR).

The case follows a 2022 incident in which a learner was raped by a school caretaker.

Speaking to VOC News, SECTION27’s Zeenat Sujee said authorities failed to hold the caretaker accountable.

“I think this case is trying to highlight what we have been saying: the National Child Protection Register is a vital tool to help prevent sexual predators from accessing schools and other places where children are present. The register is regulated by the Children’s Act, and the Department of Social Development is its custodian,” Sujee explained.
