SONA 2025: Education experts’ expectations ahead of SONA

An education expert has announced that issues pertaining to the education sector has been ongoing for years, however they are more visible now than they were 30 years ago.

Speaking to VOC News, Barry Firth, Professor at the Faculty of Education at CPUT said society has become more aware of certain challenges within the sector and are now actively keeping people accountable.

“We are now seeing that the sector has provided very little in terms of education to people. The sad reality is that South Africa follows global trends when it comes to policy making and this cannot be the case as we have a very diverse group from various parts of life in the sector, so the same policies that would benefit someone from a more privileged background, might not work for someone from a more disadvantaged upbringing,” he added.

When asked what he wants the President of South Africa to announce during his State of the Nation Address (SONA), Firth said the president should reintroduce free education to all.

“I know this is a big ask, but I wish he would talk about education and announce that access to education would be free to all and that the quality of education would be exactly the same, irrespective of where learners are based,” he added.
