The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an advisory warning of expected inclement weather across parts of the Western Cape from Sunday through to Tuesday.
SAWS has issued an orange level 6 warning for disruptive rainfall, which could lead to flooding of roads, low-lying bridges, and both formal and informal settlements.
An orange level 6 warning for damaging winds and waves has also been issued along the coastline between Lambert’s Bay and Plettenberg Bay, with possible danger to navigation at sea and damage to coastal infrastructure.
In addition, a yellow level 2 warning for damaging winds remains in place.
The warning comes after heavy rainfall this week caused flooding in several areas, led to the death of one person in Knysna, and forced evacuations.
Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell said the approaching frontal system is expected to bring disruptive rainfall, strong to gale-force winds, and damaging waves.
“We ask residents to put in place mitigation measures to protect their properties, including clearing gutters and any other blockages on their properties, checking roofs for any leaks or loose sheets, securing any loose items and materials like garden furniture that could be vulnerable to wind gusts,” Powell said.
The Disaster Coordinating Team (DCT) will be activated to coordinate the City’s response to weather-related incidents and impacts.
Authorities have urged residents to follow official updates on social media and trusted media platforms, and to report emergencies to the Public Emergency Communication Centre on 021 480 7700.
