SAPS intensifies efforts to clamp down on GBV in South Africa

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the arrest of over 13,000 suspects in the past week as part of a nationwide crackdown on serious crimes, including murder, attempted murder, and drug-related offenses.

Among those arrested, 222 individuals were taken into custody for rape—highlighting SAPS’ intensified focus on tackling gender-based violence (GBV).

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe reiterated the service’s commitment to protecting vulnerable communities.

“We continue to intensify our fight against gender-based violence. Those arrested include individuals accused of violating minors, among them a pensioner alleged to have raped a 14-year-old girl. SAPS will persist with these operations to ensure the safety of all South Africans,” she said.
