Repair work has begun at a public housing complex in Hanover Park after years of complaints from residents about structural damage and delayed maintenance.
Residents say City of Cape Town officials started work last week, repairing part of a damaged support pillar, replacing wooden railings and installing a new bathroom window mechanism. Officials have also inspected broken windows and identified additional repairs that will be carried out once the necessary materials have been ordered.
Resident Nadiya Braaf said the work marks the start of long-awaited maintenance at the complex.
“The City has repaired part of the damaged pillar, replaced the wooden railings and installed a new bathroom window mechanism. Officials have also assessed the broken windows and other repairs, with additional work expected once the materials have been ordered,” Braaf said.
The City of Cape Town said the repairs followed an assessment of Braaf’s home in June and included work to restore the concrete encasement surrounding the steel support column that provides structural support to the staircase landing
“Following our teams’ assessment at Johnvlei Walk in June 2026, our officials carried out repairs to the concrete encasement surrounding the steel support column that provides structural support to the staircase landing,” the City said.
The municipality reiterated that the staircase landing remains safe for residents.
“The staircase landing remains structurally sound and stable. The repairs were carried out and the teams are satisfied that the staircase landing will continue to provide safe and reliable service for many years,” the City said.
