President Cyril Ramaphosa said the ANC’s 5th National General Council (NGC), currently underway in Boksburg, will play a decisive role in confronting South Africa’s challenges and in redefining the movement’s direction. He noted that the principles of the National Democratic Revolution now face “new complexities”, calling for greater ideological clarity, discipline, and adaptability within the organisation.
“The balance of forces is always in motion. During this NGC, delegates are called upon to determine what should be done to address the challenges that we face as a nation and as an organisation,” Ramaphosa told delegates.
He said the discussion documents before the NGC outline a refreshed vision for the National Democratic Revolution, centred on building a capable, ethical and developmental state that delivers tangible change. This includes strengthening basic services, expanding opportunities, and protecting the rights and dignity of all South Africans.
“A central part of our discussion further summarises the vision of the National Democratic Revolution, incorporating representative, participatory, and deliberative elements so that the people shall govern,” he emphasised.
Ramaphosa said the outcomes of this NGC will guide the ANC as it confronts governance failures, economic stagnation, and social inequality, stressing that accountability and renewal must be at the core of the party’s path forward.
