Matlala to Testify Despite Delay Bid as Parliament Probes Police Interference

Controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is set to testify before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee investigating political interference in the South African Police Service on Wednesday, despite a last-minute attempt by his legal team to postpone the hearing.

Matlala, currently detained at Kgosi Mampuru C-Max prison in Tshwane for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend, argued that poor prison conditions, health issues, and inadequate preparation time prevented him from properly preparing for his appearance.

The alleged leader of the so-called “Big Five” cartel is linked to a string of investigations, including corruption, drug and human trafficking, and contract killings, all of which place his testimony under significant public scrutiny.

Criminologist Simon Howell said both legitimate concerns and strategic manoeuvring could be behind Matlala’s attempt to delay the proceedings.

“On the one hand, you could assume it would be difficult for him to prepare and gain access to the resources he needs because of his incarceration. But equally, it could be a power play, a prisoner instructing Parliament to delay proceedings simply because he can. We don’t know the inner workings, but it may be a legitimate reason, or it may be a continuation of the power dynamics that placed him at the centre of the networks he’ll be asked to discuss today.”
