Icasa is expected to meet Parliament’s portfolio committee on communications on Tuesday to discuss its ruling on the SABC’s ban on broadcasting violent protests.
During the sitting the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) is expected to discuss the monitoring of the implementation of its compliance and complaints committee ruling on the SABC’s ban on broadcasting violent protests.
On May 26, the broadcaster banned the airing of footage of violent protests on its television stations. Icasa held public hearings and, on July 11, instructed the SABC to reverse its decision.
On July 20, the High Court in Pretoria interdicted the SABC from implementing its protest policy, following an application by the Helen Suzman Foundation.
An ad hoc committee looking into the SABC board heard in December that Icasa has laid criminal charges against the SABC for failing to adhere to the ruling it made regarding the withdrawal of its “protest policy”.
