The Green Point Flea Market is set to return on Sunday, 11 May, after being closed for nearly 15 years. The market was previously suspended due to the stadium’s redevelopment ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and its reopening is being welcomed as a step toward restoring normalcy for the informal sector.
Speaking on VOC Sunday Live, Rosheda Muller, Chairperson of the Green Point Flea Market and National President of NITASA, expressed her excitement about the market’s return, highlighting its value for the informal economy. She confirmed that hundreds of traders have already submitted applications to join.
“We have been inundated with hundreds of applications. It really shows the need for economic empowerment; it shows the need of the people of Cape Town who are looking and wanting to earn a living. This is a way we can bring back the historical and cultural event we have always had on a Sunday,” said Muller.
She added that the return of the Green Point Flea Market also paves the way for broader community development, as supporting the market directly benefits traders and their families.
“We need to look at supporting one another as communities, and for that reason, traders are excited. But with bated breath, we hope that communities across Cape Town and beyond will be supporting us,” Muller concluded.
