Foot-and-Mouth Vaccination Rollout Set for Early Next Year

Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen has announced a nationwide vaccination drive against foot-and-mouth disease, with millions of doses set to roll out from early next year, starting in the hardest-hit provinces.

The Western Cape recently reported a controlled outbreak in the Cape Winelands, which officials say is under control. KwaZulu-Natal remains the epicentre, with 180 of the 274 unresolved outbreaks nationwide.

Despite 931,200 animals being vaccinated with government-procured vaccines over the past three months, uncontrolled livestock movement is slowing progress and prolonging the outbreak.

Steenhuisen warned farmers to watch for symptoms, which include fever, blisters in the mouth or on the feet, excessive drooling, and lameness.

“We must be honest with the public and our farming sector. This is a battle we are currently not winning. That’s why we are now strengthening our approach to bring the situation under control.” Steenhuisen said.
