Five Arrested, Stolen Goods Recovered After Manenberg Hijacking

Western Cape police said a coordinated effort between SAPS units and Cape Town Metro Police led to the successful recovery of stolen goods following a hijacking in Manenberg on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 08:00, when a Toyota Hino truck was hijacked in the Manenberg area. Metro Police assisted SAPS in tracing the vehicle, which was later found abandoned in Endlovini, Khayelitsha, without the stolen stock. Officers continued searching the area and soon noticed another suspicious Hino truck. The vehicle was closely monitored as officers suspected it might have been used to transport the stolen goods.

At approximately 12:30, the truck was seen offloading items at a wholesaler in Eersterivier. SAPS Makhaza Hijacking Team members, together with Metro Police, moved in and arrested five suspects.

“Members of the Makhaza SAPS Hijacking Team, together with the Metro Police, swooped in and arrested four Zimbabwean males and one Bangladeshi male. The stolen goods, with an estimated value of R150 000, were seized,” said SAPS spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala.

Cape Town Metro Police Spokesperson Superintendent Ruth Solomons confirmed that officers also confiscated the truck and six cellphones as part of the investigation. She added: “The five suspects, aged between 28 and 41, were arrested and detained at Kleinvlei SAPS. The goods were returned to the rightful owner.”

The suspects are expected to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once charged.
