Elsie’s River community gripped by fear following shooting of 14-year old boy

The Elsies River community has been devastated by yet another shooting incident on 18th Avenue and Norwood Street, which claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy on Friday.

Five suspects aged 16, 21, 23, 27, and 30 are scheduled to appear in Goodwood Magistrates’ Court on Monday after being arrested on murder charges.

SAPS Spokesperson Captain F.C. Van Wyk believes the motive is gang-related, stating:

“Members responded to a shooting incident and discovered the victim lying in the road with multiple gunshot wounds to the head.” The circumstances surrounding this incident are being investigated. Sterling’s investigation and follow-up on all intelligence gathered by Elsie’s River detectives and members of the Anti-Gang Unit resulted in the arrests of five suspects.”

Community activist and worker Steve Ross stated that the community is living in fear from the ongoing gun violence in the area.

“The community of Elsie’s River is bleeding. Around the corner could be the next death, could be the next victim. We really need not only our politicians and police but also the community to change and bring about change. We desperately need that. We shouldn’t lose focus, but there should always be hope. We should always be that glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, and that is what we are striving for as the community. We will come together at the memorial of this young man who was shot and killed so ruthlessly,” said Ross.
