Court orders blockade on Zama Zama mine in Stilfontein to cease

By Rachel Mohamed

The issue of illegal mining at the abandoned mine in Stilfontein in the Northwest Province has raised major concerns throughout the country.

This matter has sparked debate around the socio-economic conditions in the community, the humanity of the miners, and the role of the state, as the police have refused entry into the mines where illegal miners known as Zama Zama remained trapped underground under unsafe conditions.

Speaking on VOC’s NewsBeat show, Dr. Llewyn Curlewis, Legal Expert & Senior Law Lecturer at the Department of Procedural Law at the University of Pretoria, stated that the miners must not be besieged underground. This comes after the Pretoria High Court ruled against the blockade.

“Sanity prevailed in the sense that the so-called Society for the Protection of Our Constitution approached the court on Saturday morning on an urgent basis to intervene in the matter.”
