Brackenfell residents and business owners are calling on the City of Cape Town to halt all new developments until critical road infrastructure is upgraded.
In a petition to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, they warn that continued residential and commercial expansion is placing unbearable pressure on the area’s road network, leading to what they describe as “traffic paralysis”.
They argue that major projects, including the widening of Brackenfell Boulevard and the N1 bridge, should be completed before any further development applications are approved.
In response to the petition, mayoral committee member for urban mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas says the city notes the petition regarding the Infrastructure Moratorium and Capital Budget Allocation for the Brackenfell Boulevard/Vredekloof Corridor.
“As we [Urban Mobility] understand it, the petition raises objections relating to the rezoning approval of the Glengarry Mixed Use Development. In terms of the applicable statutory processes, any objection or appeal to a development approval must follow the prescribed due process, with the Executive Mayor serving as the appeal authority for qualifying decisions. The relevant officials in the Transport Impact Assessment (TIA) section and the City’s Spatial Planning and Environment Directorate have been requested to provide technical comments on the matters raised in the petition. These inputs will inform the City’s response through the appropriate processes, “ said Quintas.
