The Bo-Kaap community has ushered in a new era of leadership following the election of a new executive committee for the Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association (BKCRA).
The elections were held on Sunday, 4 May, with residents over the age of 18 eligible to cast their votes.
Shaykh Dawood Terblanche emerged as the new chairperson with 89 votes. Ebrahim Christian secured the position of vice-chairperson with 91 votes, and Faa-iekah Rylands was elected secretary with 91 votes, while Zayd Salie was elected as the new treasurer.

Speaking to VOC News, Shaykh Terblanche extended his heartfelt thanks to the Bo-Kaap residents for their active participation in the democratic process.
“We pray and ask the Almighty Allah SWT to grant them success in their new tenure as the new leadership of the Bo-Kaap Civic and Ratepayers Association,” said Terblanche.
He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to advocating for the interests of the historic community, which has long faced the pressures of gentrification and displacement.
“Our commitment to the Bo-Kaap community is that we will strive to have their voice heard, address the numerous challenges that we are currently facing in the Bo-Kaap and we appeal to the community to support the Civic and to assist us where we are able to build a community that is inclusive, thriving and one that is able to reassert its footprint in the annals of South Africa’s history,” he added.
